The University Committee on Academic Freedom (UCAF) safeguards one of the University’s core principles: academic freedom—the foundation of teaching, research, and open inquiry. In this systemwide role, the committee helps ensure that the University remains a place where ideas can be explored, challenged, and advanced without fear or interference. UCAF members evaluate studies and reports on any condition that may affect academic freedom, such as policy changes, external political pressures, institutional decisions, and emerging threats to open inquiry. Service on UCAF offers faculty the opportunity to engage in intellectually rigorous, principle-driven work that protects academic freedom and shapes the intellectual life of the University.
