Zsuzsanna I. Abrams
Professor of Languages and Applied Linguistics
It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Professor Zsuzsanna (Zsuzsi) Abrams, a distinguished scholar, educator, and mentor whose contributions to UCSC and to the academic community were nothing short of exemplary. Throughout her career, Professor Abrams exemplified the highest standards of excellence in research, teaching, and service, leaving an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to work alongside her. Her absence creates an immense void in our department and campus.
Professor Abrams, an internationally recognized scholar, was Professor of Applied Linguistics and German. Her research pushed the boundaries of knowledge in computer-mediated communication, intercultural communication, pragmatics, and second/foreign language pedagogy. Her work has not only advanced our understanding of critical issues in applied linguistics but also inspired countless scholars and students to pursue new lines of inquiry. Her publications, widely cited and respected, will continue to influence the field for years to come.
A gifted teacher, Professor Abrams was known for her dedication to her students and an unwavering commitment to fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and intellectual growth. Whether in the classroom or through personal mentorship, Professor Abrams inspired generations of students, many of whom credit her for igniting their passion for learning languages and helping them achieve their fullest potential.
Professor Abrams was a selfless leader, serving on numerous committees across campus, spearheaded the development of the Department of Languages and Applied Linguistics from the former Language Program as Chair, and lead in the creation of our undergraduate major in Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism. Abrams was a consistently supportive and a firm advocate for her junior colleagues. Her substantial service across campus enriched both the university and the broader field. Her generosity of spirit and tireless efforts to uplift others have left an enduring legacy.
While Professor Abrams is no longer with us, her influence and impact will be felt for generations to come. We will remember her intellect, hard work and unwavering dedication to the pursuit of knowledge as well as her collegiality, compassion and generosity in her efforts for the betterment of others. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all who were touched by her extraordinary life.
