Richard M. Friedenberg, MD, of North Tustin, CA, formerly of New Rochelle, NY, passed away on December 23, 2016 at the age of 90.

Professor Emeritus Richard Friedenberg, MD served as chairman of the UC Irvine Department of Radiological Sciences for 12 years, from 1980 until 1992. Before joining UC Irvine in 1980, Dr. Friedenberg was professor and chairman of the Department of Radiology at New York Medical College in New York, NY. He devoted his professional career to academic medicine and took particular delight in teaching medical residents, fellows and attending physicians. His former students and colleagues remember him as a role model and as a consummate professional.

Dr. Friedenberg was a fellow of the American College of Radiology and was active nationally in multiple societies. He was past president of the Society of Chairmen of Academic Radiology Departments and past president of the New York Roentgen Ray Society.

Dr. Friedenberg was an active academician with four books, 11 chapters, and over 90 articles to his credit. He was a proponent of healthcare reform promoting universal coverage. In the 1980's and 1990's he wrote numerous articles relating to the present and future needs of healthcare. He worked in the Department until he was 86 years old when he reluctantly retired.

Dr. Friedenberg is survived by his wife of more than 66 years, Gloria (Geshwind); daughter Lisa Friedenberg of Asheville, NC, son Peter Friedenberg (and his wife Georgina Friedenberg) of Needham, MA, and daughter Amy Himber (and her husband Peter Himber) of North Tustin, CA. He had five grandchildren and five great-children.
