Paul Guth

Professor of Medicine

UC Los Angeles
1927-2017

Dr. Paul Guth was born to Ben and Syd (Fischer) Guth in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Manhattan. He attended NYU and received his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in 1949. While completing his training in gastroenterology at Temple University, he met Rachael Klonymus. They married in 1953 in Philadelphia. Dr. Guth and Rachael moved to Southern California in 1957, beginning his successful 40-year career in academic medicine. He trained hundreds of scientists and GI fellows during his career at the West LA VA Medical Center, and presented at conferences around the world.

In retirement, Dr. Guth was devoted his time to Rachael and family, enjoying travel, tennis and swimming as well as studying Judaism and philosophy. He was patient, understanding and non-judgmental: an inspiration and role model to family, friends and colleagues. Dr Guth will be remembered as the deeply devoted husband to Rachael, father to David (Diana), Eve (Ed Livingston), Esther (Helmut Fortunato) and Naomi (Robert Ades), grandfather to Sarah, Kenny and Liz Livingston, Ethan and Olivia Fortunato, and Lauren Ades, brother of Lloyd Guth, and cousin of Roni and Vicki Fischer.
