UCSD Professor Powell Elected 2008-2009 Senate Vice Chair
UC San Diego Professor of Pathology Henry C. (Harry) Powell has been elected 2008-09 Council and Assembly Vice Chair.
Professor Powell received his M.D. from University College Dublin, and began his UCSD career as an assistant professor of pathology in 1976, after completing a distinguished clinical career that included a rotating internship at Philadelphia General Hospital; a residency in combined anatomic and clinical pathology at UCSD; and a chief residency in neuropathology at Massachusetts General Hospital. His Academic Senate service includes work with the UCSD Committee on Academic Personnel and one year as UCSD Division Chair in 2006-07.
“I am very honored and pleased to be elected to the 2008-2009 Senate vice chair,” he said. “The system of shared governance at UC is a unique institution that has ensured informed discussion and creative interaction between administrative leaders and faculty, to an extent rarely found in institutions of higher education private or public. During times of transition, the role of the Senate is key to continuity and institutional stability by conserving institutional memory and articulating UC values. At present, the prospect of budget cuts driven by a weaker state economy threatens the stability of the UC system and calls for greater collaboration among UCOP, the faculty and the Regents. The Senate can facilitate this effort and will be required to do so in order to preserve the character and quality of the great institution that all of us cherish.”
Professor Powell is an authority in experimental neuropathology with an emphasis on the peripheral neuropathies. He has trained numerous residents and fellows who have gone on to become directors of neuropathology at other distinguished academic institutions. Dr. Powell has published over 200 articles and has held many positions of service at UCSD, including interim chair of the Department of Pathology, director of the Pathology Residency Program, head of the Division of Neuropathology, neuropathologist to the Veterans Affairs of San Diego Healthcare System, member of the Department of Pathology Management Committee and the Pathology Housestaff Committee, and director of the Neuropathology Residency Program. He was also president of the Society for Experimental Neuropathology from 1996 to 1999.
Professor Powell will be the 47th leader of the systemwide Academic Senate when he becomes chair in 2009-2010.
