Irvine's Mary Gilly Elected 2013-14 Vice Chair
Mary C. Gilly, UC Irvine Professor of Management in the UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business, has been elected 2013-14 Academic Senate Vice Chair.
Professor Gilly has chaired the Irvine division of the Academic Senate since 2012. She also served as chair of the UCI Council on Academic Personnel and as a member of the UCI Special Senate Committee on Diversity, Senate Council on Privilege and Tenure, and Graduate Council. In addition to her service on the Academic Council, Professor Gilly has been active at the systemwide level as a member of the University Committee on Academic Personnel. She has served in several administrative capacities at UCI, including Vice Dean in the Graduate School of Management and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. She has held positions on several professional associations, including Academic Director of the Association for Consumer Research and President of the Academic Council of the American Marketing Association.
When she succeeds Bill Jacob as Systemwide Senate chair in 2014-15, she will be the first chair from a business school since Berkeley’s E. T. Grether in 1965-66 and the first from the Irvine campus since Arnold Binder in 1993-94.
“These are challenging times for the University of California,” she said. “The Senate plays a key role in explaining how research enhances our teaching and the value of our scholarship to Californians, and indeed, the world. While advocating for affordability and access, we must not allow the quality of the UC to erode. I look forward to working with Bill Jacob in responding to these challenges.”
