Hideya Gamo

1924 – 2006

Hideya Gamo, Ph.D., professor emeritus of electrical engineering and computer science, passed away September 17, 2006. He is survived by his wife, Yasko, and two daughters, Yuriko and Kay.

 

Born in Ueda, Nagano-ken, Japan on April 1, 1924, Gamo received his B.Sc. in 1946 and his D.Sc. in 1958, from the University of Tokyo in physics. He was appointed an engineering professor at UC Irvine in 1968 and taught until 1991 when he retired.

 

Gamo’s research interests focused on work with quantum electronics and optics, with emphasis in nonlinear optical processes in organic ferroelectric thin films, squeezed states in degenerated parametric amplifiers and applications to interferometry, electron waves in heterojunctions, and unconventional imaging optics.

 

During his many years at The Henry Samueli School of Engineering, he was involved with a variety of committees and activities, including a member of the materials science program committee, the undergraduate study committee and ECE representative, a faculty research and travel committee member, and a member of the graduate study committee (chair, 1975-77). He also participated in UC Irvine’s Academic Senate, the University Speaker’s Bureau, interviewing candidates as part of the education abroad program for Japan, the Japanese Industrial Research Activities for UC Irvine Research Park, and in ASUCI as a Japanese Student Association advisor.

 

Prior to UC Irvine, Gamo was a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Rochester, worked as member of the research staff at IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and was a research associate, and lecturer at the University of Tokyo’s physics department.
