Boniface I. Obichere

Boniface Obichere, former director of the James S. Coleman African Studies Center and professor of history, died in Los Angeles on March 14, 1997. He was 64.

 

A native of Nigeria, Obichere was a premier African scholar whose interest included African history, West Africa and the kingdom of Dahomey. Obichere received his doctorate in African history from Oxford University in 1967. After receiving his Ph.D., Obichere began a 30-year career at UCLA as a champion of African and diasporan causes, values and traditions. He is survived by his wife, Armer Jean, son Chikere, and many other family members here and in Nigeria.
