Harold Somers

Harold Somers died on June 19, 2001 in Los Angeles at age 85 following a brief illness. The Toronto native served as chair of the department from 1961 to 1966 and as divisional dean of the College of Letters & Science from 1967 to 1970. Harold was instrumental in UCLA’s decision to sponsor the Western Economic Journal in 1966. He served as co-editor of the publication from 1966 to 1970. Before coming to UCLA in 1960, Harold was dean of the School of Business Administration at the University of Buffalo. Harold was the initial discoverer and expositor of the famous and influential “government balanced-budget multiplier theorem.” He published several, widely cited, pioneering analyses of government tax and expenditure policies, especially on gift and estate taxes.
